Alessandroni, Hugh Vincent

AlessandroniˍHugh.jpgHuHughALESSANDRONI1928A.jpggh Alessandroni attended Columbia University where he learned to fence under the Hall of Fame coach, James Murray. After earning a degree in Chemical Engineering and qualifying for 2 US Olympic teams, he led a team of engineers who invented the 1st electrical epee scoring device used in Olympic history (1936).
At the l932 Olympics, Hugh Alessandroni was a member of the highly successful U.S. foil team which defeated France, throwing the final into a three-way tie between France, Italy and the U.S. that was decided by a series of barrage matches. Alessandroni and his U.S. teammates won the Olympic bronze medal that year. This medal brought the United States great publicity and respect throughout the world. He went on to win the US Men’s Foil championship in l934 and l936. Again in 1936, Hugh made the Berlin Olympic Games where he and the US foil team tied for 5th place.  His 2 U.S. foil titles were accomplished with 8-time US foil champ Joe Levis as his adversary. He was second to Levis 3 times. Representing the New York Fencers Club, he won 7 team national championships, 6 with the foil and 1 with 3-weapon. This man’s significance in American fencing history is obvious.
